PBS Digital - broadcasting 1080i
Unlike the other OTA networks, who’s HD broadcasts are a mirror of their analog schedule, PBS Digital has a unique schedule of programs and documentaries each month in HDTV, many with DD 5.1. In addition they also offer upconverted widescreen programs. TBN debuted On April 17th 2006 during TBN’s Spring Telethon, TBN will use its new HD studio for shows like “Praise the Lord” show, other exclusive TBN programs, and special features.
Not far from Outdoor Channel's headquarters, Trinity Broadcasting System is converting its main studio facility in Costa Mesa, Calif., to all-digital/HD, in preparation for launching TBN HD. Trinity is spending $3 million on new HD cameras and master control equipment that will be able to handle up to nine channels. Another $6-8 million will be spent on upgrading a second studio in Costa Mesa and on other facilities around the country used by Trinity. Trinity is pooling funds with some ministries running on cable and broadcast syndication to buy HD equipment at a discount from vendors. "When you go to a vendor with a large order, the savings can be pretty strong," says Paul Crouch Jr., administration VP for TBN. TBN HD

Golf Channel/Versus HD
Comcast announces the creation of new high-definition cable channel combining content from its Versus and Golf Channel brands. the new network will simulcast Golf Channel programming by day and Versus (formerly OLN) content by night. Comcast, which owns both networks, plans to call the channel Golf Channel/Versus. The channel will join Comcast's lineup of networks consisting of E!, Style, Golf Channel, Versus, G4 and regional sports outlets. Comcast has a commitment from DirecTV to start carrying the new channel some time next year. Comcast will gradually begin rolling out the new network on its own systems starting in January, a Versus executive said. Golf Channel/Versus will represent an unusual entry among HD networks. Most cable brands launch either a simulcast HD network (such as ESPN and TNT), or a stand-alone channel that combines content from several brands (such as Discovery HD Theater and MTV's MHD). By mixing content from two channels, yet airing as a simulcast during different times during the day, Golf Channel/Versus aims for the best of both worlds. "We think this is the simplest, easiest and best way to go right now," said Marc Fein, senior VP of programming and production for Versus. Mr. Fein said Comcast decided to combine the channels because that solution gives bandwidth-strapped carriers more incentive to offer the HD service—which is free to cable and satellite operators that currently run Versus and Golf Channel. By running a simulcast feed, Comcast hopes to decrease viewer confusion, Mr. Fein said. "If you want to watch the hockey game, you can see it in either standard definition or HD at the same time," he said. Under the Versus brand, the channel will initially offer HD hockey, boxing, bull riding and field sports, which will air from 7 p.m. to midnight. Executives still haven't decided whether Versus's tentpole event, the Tour de France, will be available in HD, as the network relies on a feed from an overseas partner, Mr. Fein said. "There have been good conversations; it is possible," Mr. Fein said. Golf Channel programming will include an exclusive HD airing of the PGA Tour and hundreds of hours of play from other tournaments, and will run from noon to 7 p.m.

Havoc HD - broadcasting 1080i
The indie music and action sports service Havoc is going HD by launching its on demand offering in high-definition on Comcast and a daily block of linear, interactive programming on DirecTV’s channel 101. On cable, Havoc now has on-demand services; Havoc Music, which focuses on music from indie labels; and Havoc Sports, which features such action sports as snowboarding, skateboarding and motocross. The two VOD services, which carried on all the major cable operators except Time Warner Cable, average over 37 million video views a month and have over 10 million unique viewers. Havoc also programs a four-hour Havoc branded block of HD programming each day on DirecTV’s channel 101. This interactive service allows viewers to vote on which music videos they want to watch via SMS and chat live with a moderator, other viewers and guests via SMS. Next year, Havoc is also looking to regularly offer live music in HD on the DirecTV block. The programming would allow viewers can interact via SMS with live bands playing from a California club.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is now producing its weekly wrestling shows in High-Definition TV .
SmackDown live event at Mohegan Sun Arena completely in HD. "High-definition television has a different aspect ratio," Senior Vice President of Television Operations Mike Grossman told WWE.com. "The screen is wider than standard definition television, so we want to see how that widescreen aspect ratio effects what we see on the screen. It's a very vivid image and the Superstars will be very vivid." Several other aspects of production that would be effected by going HD will be experimented with as well. "We're actually going to have a makeup artist that has experience in HD," said Grossman. "They use airbrushing techniques as opposed to traditional makeup. But we also need to see how our lighting is affected, how pyro translates to hi def… And then there's audio. When we make the move to HD we'll be broadcasting and recording in 5.1 surround sound so we'll be playing with that too." Sunday's test is just one step in the transition process to recording and distributing content in HD. The transition will require tens of millions of dollars of upgrades in equipment and a minimum of three years to complete. However, if everything goes well Sunday, WWE fans may be able to start enjoying their favorite Superstars like never before. "We can provide HD content, [but] our broadcast partners have not migrated to a true HD platform as of yet," explained Vice President of Event Technical Operations Duncan Leslie. "The first way our fans could see our content in HD [might be] through home video on DVDs." By 2009, all television broadcasts will be migrated to a digital format. While it will be a long and costly process, WWE is excited about the opportunities this presents. "There's an excitement about it because it is a challenge," said Leslie. "One thing that we're really good at is changing and upgrading and pushing the envelope. We're going to do HD like no one else has ever done it, just like we do everything else. I'm sure there will be techniques that we employ that will be copied. From that perspective, it's a challenge to do it better than anyone else."

Formula One Management (FOM) is apparently ready to debut its new High-Definition (HD) television equipment for the two North American rounds, if remaining technical bugs can be worked out guaranteeing the system won't crash during a broadcast. At this time it's not known if the HD pictures will be available anywhere or whether the broadcasts will convert to 16:9 widescreen format. However, even in standard definition the new equipment should yield a sharper cleaner image improving the pictures. It's thought that the wear and tear on FOM's equipment from all the travel over recent years necessitated replacement. Pitpass sources claim that the HD equipment would have been purchased earlier, however, FOM was trying to do a deal with Panasonic. Consequently, it will be interesting to see if the equipment is Panasonic (a major sponsor of Toyota Racing), since, from 2007, the Japanese GP has been awarded to Fuji Raceway, which is owned by Toyota.

Howard Stern has entered into an agreement with iN DEMAND Networks, to provide a new TV home for the popular radio pioneer in a subscription-only format, available in HDTV. Expected to premier on cable in January 2006.

WYCC will build three studios, five non-linear editing suites and two graphics suites, employing an array of Sony HD technology throughout the facility. Five Sony HDC-1000 studio and five HDC-1500 field cameras, will be installed as well as six of Sony's new XDCAM HD camcorders. These optical cameras will be used for field production, B-roll inserts and ENG. Sony's MVS- 8000A and MFS-2000 production switchers will be installed in the new complex. The station is also building a "working studio" environment for students to get hands-on experience and to produce community programming, as part of a New Media teaching center. This area will include a studio, production room and master control room. In fact, the campus will offer a course in master control as part of its broadcast curriculum.

Shaw is introducing HDTV service in Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatoon, Fort McMurray and Edmonton, with 6 HDTV channels, carrying US networks ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, Movie Central/The Movie Network depending on the area, 'Best of HDTV' channel and Fox. Videotron Cable – broadcasting 720p, 1080i and 480p EDTV
Videotron is on the air with HDTV service in select Quebec locations in and around Montreal. Currently they offer 7 HDTV channels including the US networks, The Movie Network and PPV.

Offering 13 HD channels in and around the Hamilton area, Mountain carries US networks from Detroit & Buffalo, The Movie Network, TSN HD, City-TV, and Sportsnet HD.

City-TV Toronto – broadcasting 1080i
City-TV Toronto has recently been licensed as the first OTA DTV broadcaster in Canada, on channel 53. HDTV programs include movies, The WB series Smallville and original programming like the recent Essence of Haute Couture. The Sports Network HD – broadcasting 720p
TSN has just introduced an HD version of their Canadian sports network. Initial HDTV events include the CFL and NFL Sunday Night Football. Future plans naturally include the NHL. Available now on Bell ExpressVu and Rogers Cable.

CBC Hockey Night In Canada
Skating into the 21st century, the CBC has announced they will offer the outdoor game on 11/22/03 in Edmonton, between the Oilers and Montreal Canadians, in HDTV. Bell ExpressVu, Star Choice, Rogers Cable, Shaw, Videotron will all offer the HD version of the game.

NEWS FLASH: The CBC HD channel will offer the 2004 NHL All Star Game in HDTV, on Sunday, 2/8, and the YoungStars & SuperSkils on Saturday 2/7, from St. Paul, MN. The CBC also announced they will offer the Habs @ Leafs Hockey Day In Canada game in HDTV, on Saturday 2/21.

Third generation Alberta broadcaster Drew Craig is preparing to launch toronto/one, a brand-new OTA DTV channel. The new channel focuses on entertainment in Toronto and the city's lifestyle. Programming will include The Toronto Show, Toronto Life Magazine, Metro Today, which dials into current affairs with a different style, and ABC Monday Night Football. toronto/one will also be available on ExpressVu and Rogers Cable, expected sometime in the near future.

Much Music - broadcasting 1080i
MM presented the 2004 MM Video Awards in HDTV and DD 5.1. It was available on City-TV in Canada and HDNet in the US.

CBLT-TV & CBLFT-TV in Toronto goes HD in Toronto & Montreal
CBC Television Canada Enters The World Of High Definition CBC Television will launch CBC HD, the network's high definition television service, broadcasting on two new digital transmitters in Toronto and Montreal with CBC HD's first HD broadcast on Saturday, March 5. Highlights of CBC HD's inaugural weekend schedule on March 5 and 6 include a premiere of the "Nature of Things: Nature Bites Back--The Case of the Sea Otter." Following this, CBC HD will broadcast highlights from past and upcoming HD projects, including award-winning documentary producer Mark Starowicz's newest project, "Hockey: A People's History," currently in production. Airing on Sunday, March 6, will be the HD version of "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets", featuring 5.1 Surround Sound. Programming for CBC HD will be based on CBC's regular network schedule, with HD and wide-screen programming simulcast when available. A number of programs and specials, including "The Newsroom," "Nature of Things: Geologic Journey," and "Getting Along Famously" will air in high definition as available. Within the greater Toronto and Montreal areas, viewers can receive the new service free over the air using a UHF antenna and an HD-capable TV set with a digital ATSC tuner.
