The Basics
....from four potential sources:
D-VHS
NOTE: There are four older D-VHS units that are not HDTV compatible. The discontinued Hitachi, Hughes and RCA decks were designed to record standard definition DirecTV programming, interfaced with specific DirecTV receivers. The discontinued JVC HM-DSR100RU was for use solely with standard definition Dish Network digital recording.
The original HDTV capable D-VHS unit was the Panasonic PV-HD1000. It was introduced in 1999, along with its companion DTV tuner, the TU-DST50 and later the TU-DST51. Either of the tuners provided the HDTV signal via Firewire to the D-VHS deck. This concept still is being used for all HDTV recording, with no D-VHS units having a built-in DTV, DBS, Cable or C/Ku tuner, thus relying on a Firewire interface to an outboard HDTV source. This approach also allows for HDTV copies using Firewire recording from D-VHS to D-VHS, see D-Theater caveat below.
Current D-VHS decks are available from both JVC & Mitsubishi.
JVC is the owner of the VHS formats, so it follows they would be the foremost proponent of D-VHS. JVC D-VHS units have two unique features: Component video output and D-Theater playback. D-Theater is prerecorded theatrical release movies, recorded at a higher bit rate than ATSC HDTV. The 28 Mbps bit rate results in greater detail and less compression artifacts during playback. JVC D-Theater D-VHS decks are also compatible with D-VHS tapes made on other machines. D-Theater recording via Firewire from D-VHS to D-VHS is not possible due to copy protection function. NOTE: The JVC model 30000 has numerous reports from AVS members of unreliable performance. Recent reports have JVC correcting the issues and supporting owners both in and out of warranty. See the related topics in the HDTV Recorders Forum before purchasing this product.
The current Mitsubishi units are very similar to the Panasonic unit, in that they only have Firewire DTV connectivity.

Firewire Source to Windows XP PC
PC recording of HDTV is made possible by Microsoft Windows XP's native support for IEEE1394. The PC can be used as both a storage/ retreival device and a playback device. The PC's peripherals (hard drive, DVD drive) are used to store the HDTV signal that comes from compatible sources. Used as a retreival device the stored HDTV signal is played back through the IEEE1394 to a display device or other storage / communication device. Used as a playback device, various hardware and software HDTV signal decoders can be used to present HDTV video and audio for viewing.
To use the IEEE1394 interface in WinXP, specific support of the partiular model of unit with the IEEE1394 port is required. That is, the presence of a IEEE1394 port doesn't imply compatibility with Windows XP. Various drivers and applications software are required and available to use the JVC and Mitsubishi DVHS decks with Windows XP. For example, even though one "OTA only" model of the Samsung HDTV has IEEE1394, it cannot be used with Windows XP since there are no mating drivers. The 169time equipped DTC100 can be used with Windows XP.

HDTV can currently be digitally recorded in five ways:
· D-VHS
· HDTV Tuner PC Card - Win or Linux
· Firewire Source to Windows XP PC
· Firewire Source to Apple Mac
· HDTV PVR
· Digital Television (DTV)
· Direct Broadcast Satellite DTV (DBS)
· Cable DTV
· C/Ku Band Satellite DTV
Digital VHS is capable of recording and playing back the full 19+ Mbps data stream of ATSC HDTV broadcasts, including Dolby Digital audio. There are a few different varieties of D-VHS decks, but all are essentially ‘bit buckets’, capable of recording HDTV and playing it back identically to the original broadcast.

A firewire equipped Apple Mac running MacOS X 10.3 Panther (or 10.2 Jaguar with updated firewire components) can function as any emulated DVHS deck for both recording and playback of OTA HD broadcasts. To accomplish this you will need the demo application VirtualDVHS which is included with Apple's Firewire SDK 18. VirtualDVHS should work with a variety devices including most Mitsubishi HDTV's, the Samsung SIR-T165 STB, Mitsubishi HD-2000U and JVC 30k DVHS decks. The firewire equipped devices controls all recording and timer functionality and the Mac simply acts as a DVHS deck. Please note that the VirtualDVHS demo is really a proof of concept rather than a fully functional application although some forum members have had good results. Source code is also available so some enterprising developer may be able to wrap a polished GUI around this and ship a commercial product.

JVC also offers a professional analog HDTV format called W-VHS. It does a very good job of recording and playing back HDTV video in analog format. It's compatible with component video or RGBHV, and the audio is two channel stereo HiFi VHS. Drawbacks: Units are expensive, W-VHS tape is expensive, no DD audio, no prerecorded tapes. Used W-VHS decks have been found by AVS members for less than $1000.
